Newsletter Volunteer

The Newsletter Volunteer is an unpaid, primarily virtual volunteer position. He/she will assist with creating our quarterly and special event e-newsletters and will report to our Marketing and PR Lead. The newsletter requires engaging and topical written content, sharing Komak’s vision, mission, initiatives and events. Quarterly news and activities will be summarized to keep supporters, donors, volunteers, and the public abreast of Komak campaigns, progress, projects and accomplishments, linking back to our website.

You will be part of the Communications team working together to consistently share content that supports our mission and board goals.

This role directly contributes to Komak’s mission to provide short-term assistance to fill a financial gap in living expenses for cancer patients unable to work during their treatment.

Approximate Time Required: 2-4 hours weekly/3-6 months

Responsibilities

• Research current events, developments and articles focused on quarterly themes and topics.

• Write & source articles for the quarterly e-newsletter including story sourcing from current or former clients.

• Summarize and focus on the organization's quarterly milestones, news and activities.

• Ensure articles are free of grammatical and spelling errors.

• Review and confirm copyright approval or restrictions.


Skills & Personal Traits

• Excellent verbal/written communication, creative writing, grammar and proofreading skills.

• Demonstrates creative copy writing and copy-editing skills.

• Marketing, communications and SEO skills, a plus.

• Ability to learn new communication tools, asset storage and database/software programs.

• Interest in the nonprofit sector and ability to maintain the “voice” of an organization.

• Interest in writing and raising awareness for the critical need Komak provides in our communities.

• Works well independently and proactively as part of a team.

• Ability to adhere to deadlines and be flexible with changing priorities when they arise.

• Due to the nature of our clients medical conditions, a high level of compassion and empathy is essential also the ability to adhere to strict confidentiality practices.

Qualifications/Requirements:

• Journalism or communication education would be helpful.

• Practical experience in creative article writing.

Komak will provide reference letters for all volunteers who successfully complete their volunteer placement.

This position requires a minimum 3-6 month commitment for an average of 2-4 hours per week, which will be completed virtually in the Newsletter Volunteer’s own office or home. Position commitment is subject to renewal and extension by agreement from both parties.
